CIL2007: Wed. Morning Keynote – The World Digital Library Initiative

The World Digital Library Initiative exists to create a digital library of significant original materials representing all of the major cultures from around the world and make it accessible to scholars and the general public.
The WDLI partners with the U.N., other national libraries, and the tech community (Google, Yahoo, Apple, Stanford Univ.).
Content Acquisition – “Work with partners to digitize content in places where little or no scanning is being done”
Constructing a Sustainable Network, both in a technical sense and as a community of institutions and scholars.
Website will be multilingual, visually appealing to a new generation of users, able to search and browse a large volume of content. Will include a variety of media formats and social networking features, as well as accommodations for low bandwidth and mobile device platforms. A prototype will be launched in Fall of 2007 at www.worlddigitallibrary.org. Full-scale launch anticipated in September 2008.
